Most people take their sense of balance for granted but the way our bodies achieve balance is actually a complex process that involves many body parts, including the ears, brain, and heart. If you are experiencing dizziness or vertigo, you may be going around in circles trying to figure out the cause. The good news is that both vertigo and dizziness are treatable conditions. Let’s learn a bit more about what they are and how chiropractic care can help.
What is the difference between vertigo and dizziness?
Dizziness is feeling disoriented in space, an impairment of spatial orientation. It can cause lightheadedness and an unsteady, nauseated, faint, or woozy feeling that affects balance and increases the risk of falling. A dizzy spell can come on when a person is already moving, standing still, or lying down.
Vertigo is a symptom of an underlying condition that causes an abrupt internal or external spinning sensation that can make you feel so nauseous or unsteady that you can’t even walk. It can also cause headaches, feeling like you are going to faint, lightheadedness, and blurred vision. Many who experience vertigo describe a feeling that the environment around them is moving or spinning or like either you or the objects around you are swaying, spinning, or floating.
Dr. Noble’s Experience with Vertigo and Dizziness
I was in college when I first felt dizziness that would eventually, years later, turn into debilitating vertigo. Chiropractic care was a big part of getting past it and today I live without any dizziness or vertigo. The first place to look is into one’s diet. For instance, diets high in refined sugar, eggs, dairy, or gluten all have a pro-inflammatory effect on the body. When inflammation levels are high in the upper neck, for instance, it can result in dizziness or vertigo. So try eliminating the foods named above and bring a lot more fruits and vegetables into your diet. You may be surprised at how much better you feel overall!
Chiropractic Care for Vertigo and Dizziness
Vertigo and dizziness can be completely disorienting and downright scary. There are many triggers for dizziness and vertigo – including something as simple as a sudden head motion – but there are also plenty of treatments available. Chiropractic care is a fantastic, natural type of treatment for vertigo and dizziness that can help treat the underlying cause of dizziness, relieve symptoms, and even prevent future attacks.
Chiropractors use a couple of techniques to treat vertigo: the basic adjustment and the Epley Maneuver.
Basic adjustments and manipulations help the nervous system to function at its highest level. When a chiropractor adjusts the spine, it realigns the joints and vertebrae and corrects the nervous symptom pathways, which leads to better communication between the brain and body. Each adjustment can also help strengthen the immune system, which encourages faster healing.
The Epley Maneuver is a repositioning technique of the inner ear used for a common type of vertigo called BPPV (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo) that’s caused by movement of crystals around the inner ear. The maneuver shifts the head in different positions in order to reposition the crystals inside the inner ear. Like the basic adjustment, this technique is non-invasive and helps support the body’s natural healing abilities.
In addition to these treatments, chiropractors may also provide instructions for exercises and activities that you can do at home to ease the symptoms of vertigo.
When to seek medical care for dizziness and vertigo
If you are experiencing dizziness or vertigo on a regular basis or you are also experiencing any of these other symptoms along with your dizzy spells, it’s time to seek medical care:
- Double vision
- High fever
- Chest pain
- Slurred speech
- Stiff neck
- Numbness, tingling, or weakness in your face, legs, or arms.
